Well, I teach one of those worthless grant writing classes and several of my former students have seen me later and thanked me for helping to give them the confidence to apply for some small grants which they received. However you are right-on about the doofus question mark man.. Again several students come into my classes having seen that guy and thinking he was legitimate... thanks

You are so on the money Jake. Any non-profit technology clients I consult with, who want grant money, I recommend they pay an experienced grant writer up front to get results. I recommend Seliger Associates, if they ask for a referral.

The biggest benefit to the non-profit is all the grant money is theirs, free and clear. It's very difficult to insert or justify a grant writing contingency fee within government or foundation grants. Most insist all grant money be used entirely for the funded application or service.

What you wrote in getting what you pay for, is transferable to any business owner in acquiring quality clients.

Keep up the good work!!

Nonetheless, when doing interviews for the article on finding a grantwriter for Blue Avocado, I talked to several who did work for free. They don't advertise that, but when something comes along that speaks to them, they do it. Just like attorneys, accountants, doctors and other professionals, there are generous people who do things pro bono, but you have to reach out to them as part of your overall outreach efforts, not as trying to get a free professional.
